James M. Hare, Michigan's Secretary of State from 1954-1970, was born July 31, 1910 at Racine, Wis. He moved to Detroit as a child. He received a B.A. from Wayne State University and a M.A. from the University of Michigan. He was a teacher, served on the Detroit Board of Education, and was Secretary-Manager of the Michigan State Fair. A Democrat, he was elected Secretary of State in 1954 through 1966.
